Let’s begin the Discipleship 5K together!

DAY ONE

Scripture: 1Timothy 4:6-15

We spend countless hours in training to become better athletes, musicians, scientists, teachers, electricians; you name it. We train for it if we want to be good at it. Saint Paul says the soul needs the same kind of training.

Lace up those shoes and take the first step. It’s always the hardest one to take!

DAY TWO

Scripture: Genesis 32:23-33

We all face challengers. For some running a 5K (3.1 miles) is a HUGE challenge, while others face challenges in relationships or questions of faith. No matter what physical shape we are in, we all face challenges when we start a new routine such as sore muscles or finding the time to workout.

This is the same for becoming spiritually fit. We might go through the motions of reading the scripture or going to church but we can struggle with understanding our purpose in life or knowing who we truly are so we can be who we were created to be.

Time to stretch or do some cross training!

DAY THREE

Scripture: Leviticus 19 & 20

When we wake up each morning, we have a choice whether it is going to be a good day or a not so good day before we even get out of bed; seek God first. When we ask for God to guide our day and to help us make good choices, we are more likely to have a good day!

The Israelites in the scripture struggled with relying on God to help them with their everyday activities. Let God help you make good choices so you can continue your work to be a better disciple.

Heather Neds has been a ministry leader for over 20 years, sharing the Gospel message. Her personal passion and dedication to nurturing the mind, body, spirit relationship is something she has worked to develop in her own life since she was in middle school. She feels called to help people have an intimate relationship with God and believes it starts in the scriptures. In her personal and professional life, she has helped middle school, high school and many adults cultivate and deepen their faith through prayer, reflection, and retreat experiences.

She is self-taught in topics of diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyles; turning to physical activity to manage stress and a positive body image. It was when she began putting in more time and effort to developing her faith that she found the disciplines to be the same as the disciplines of making healthy choices. In a world where there aren't enough hours in the day to complete the tasks you'd like; Heather provides an effective way to double down and use exercise time as prayer time and vice versa.

Heather Neds leads a weekly Scripture Study at Keeler Women’s Center, a ministry of the Benedictine Sisters in Atchison KS. She has written articles for Celebration Publication and Catholic Fam Magazine and worked as a youth minister for 15 years in the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph. Her passion for scripture led to the development of the blog Making Scripture Relevant, where she shares life/faith stories on the website and daily reflections and prayers on social media.

Discipleship 5K: A Physical and Spiritual Journey to the Cross is her first book but is a project she has been sculpting her whole life. Heather is a teacher and spiritual leader at heart. Look for a series of books with prayers and journal questions to be used alone or as a guide for groups wanting to spend time reflecting on the scriptures and where God is moving in their lives. Also, connect with her on social media platforms @makingscripturerelevant for daily inspiration, prayers, and reflections as well as resources for the Discipleship 5K.
