Lock Bridge

Until it became outlawed to do so, people would place a security lock onto the bridge in Paris called, The Pont des Arts. This is the most famous ‘lock bridge’ but others have popped up around the world.

The tradition was for two people to place a lock on the bridge to signify their love. It was a way to show how much they loved one another, by placing the lock on the bridge and throwing the key into the river below. An outward sign of love and devotion that was to last forever. But for safety reasons The Pont des Arts was taken down, and the locks removed; some even sold.

What began as a beautifully symbolic action to show love and dedication to another person, forever, was no longer forever. These couples wanted to leave some kind of evidence of their love on the earth, even after they passed away. However, humans only have a lifetime on earth, not eternity. Only Jesus has left behind an outward sign of His love; the cross. The cross symbolizes not only His love, but also the forgiveness of sins AND everlasting life. Now that is something that will last FOREVER!
