Love is
Love is probably the most mis-understood word in the world. People equate love to spending time together, so when you don’t spend time, then your love somehow dissipates. Love can be given value by the number of gifts given such as jewelry or flowers or other extravagancies. Yet, there are others still who think love equals passion and if you don’t get that ‘feeling’ then it is not love.
And that is only when you think of love in terms of a romantic relationship. You can also love your parents, your job, and pizza. The kind of love you have for those things are completely different than the love you have for a spouse, partner or lover.
Then toss the type of love God speaks of in the Bible. Jesus specifically says to love God with all your heart, soul and mind; and love your neighbor as yourself. Is that the same kind of love?
So confusing to have multiple definitions for just one word. However, recently I found a simple answer to the question of whether it is love or not. “Love: if it don’t feel like a George Strait song, then I don’t want it!” I saw these words printed on a t-shirt at the San Antonio Rodeo, but I think it’s right on the money. Perhaps my country roots go back deeper than my recent move to Texas 😉
The bottom line is that love, for yourself, your partner/parents/family/co-workers and God is about kindness, compassion, and the desire for what is best for the other person. Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated - revision - LOVE others as you would like to be LOVED!
